5 Things I Wish I Knew Sooner

One of the most asked questions I get is, "What do you wish you knew earlier in your career?"

I always want to share my learnings with you to help you effectively navigate your own professional journey. So, I wanted to take the time today to let you in on five things I wish I knew earlier in my career. Hopefully, they can help you!

My Top Five

  1. Setting Boundaries Is Key

The earlier you begin to set your boundaries (work hours, establishing a set schedule, taking breaks, using your PTO) the more people will know about them. It's always harder to establish boundaries later on.

  2. You Own Your Career

While your manager is there to help you, they don't control your career. You have the power to decide what comes next and you need to take control of it.

  3. No One Is Always Right

Just because someone is the highest-ranking person in a meeting or organization, does not mean they know everything. It's okay to have an opinion and give input!

  4. Impact > Effort

Impact holds greater importance than effort because impact is what provides value. The effectiveness of strategy, and the ability to achieve tangible outcomes, and ensuring efficient resource allocation and sustainable growth for a project, place or team is critical to career success.

  5. Hard Work Matters When It's Visible

Recognition and acknowledgment of one's efforts not only motivate individuals but also inspire others, fostering a culture of dedication and excellence within the team or organization. Plus, visibility allows others to know that you are actively contributing to the company.
